Newsletter June / 2019
We have already had tropical days, heavy rainfall and the first severe storms: harbingers of the coming summer time. This newsletter is a harbinger of the 5th Jan Pustjens Focus Day.
Amsterdam, June 2019
This will again take place in the Bernard Haitinkzaal of the Conservatorium van Amsterdam on Sunday 26 January 2020, with the theme ’The early classics’. The repertoire for this anniversary edition of the Focus Day is focused on compositions from the '30s and '40s, works by such composers as Edgard Varèse, Henry Cowell, John Cage, Carlos Chavez, etc.
The American percussionist/composer Jason Treuting, a member of the world-renowned ensemble Sō Percussion, has already promised his cooperation as a master. After his studies at the Eastman School of Music with John Beck he subsequently obtained his "Masters in Music" and "Artist Diploma" at Yale University with Robert Van Sice. He has also studied marimba with Keiko Abe and gamelan in Bali.
In the meantime, students from the conservatories of The Hague, Maastricht and Amsterdam have pledged their cooperation again and we expect to have the commitment of students from the other institutions soon. The last two editions of the Focus Day in particular have become a unique meeting place for international students from all conservatories in the Netherlands. For that reason alone the Focus Day has taken a special place in the world of percussion, exactly as Jan Pustjens himself would have liked it.
