Jan Pustjens Focus Day 2021
You will undoubtedly remember our most recent Newsletter of December 2020 in which we announced the Jan Pustjens Focus Day 2021 on Sunday, January 31st. The JP Focus Day is now a wonderful tradition and for the 6th year with students from all Dutch conservatories who are inspired by leading masters from the percussion world. This year our guests are the American percussionist and composer Michael Burritt and the Dutch percussionist Peter Prommel (former student of Jan Pustjens).
However due to the Corona crisis, the Focus Day cannot take place live at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam this time. Michael Burritt will lead the afternoon program online from his home in America (due to the time difference with America) and Peter Prommel will provide the morning program.
All ensembles will perform from their home base online and we will switch between the various locations, an interesting experiment! All the various participants are ready and have been enthusiastically preparing.
Herman Rieken will present the whole event.
The schedule of the day is:

We are sure that this JP Focus Day will be a fantastic success and will contribute to Jan Pustjens' most important wish: to support and stimulate young percussionists in developing their talent.
It is a shame that we can’t all meet personally this time, but it is nice to know that many, like you, are with us this day anyway - albeit online.
Our big thanks go to Herman Rieken and Arnold Marinissen who make this day possible through their enormous commitment and creativity. Many thanks to Nils Feenstra for realizing all the technical details in the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
We wish you a great Focus Day!

Overview Jan Pustjens Focus Day 2021
Facebook pagina Michael Burritt
Having performed on four continents and more than forty states Michael Burritt is one of his generations leading percussion soloists and pedagogues. He is in frequent demand performing concert tours and master classes throughout the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia and Canada. Mr. Burritt has three solo as well as numerous chamber recordings including the Joseph Schwantner Percussion Concerto on the Albany label and is soon to release a new recording of solo and chamber works by Alejandro Viñao. Additionally Mr. Burritt is featured on recent recording with the world renown percussion group Nexus titled Home featuring his work Home Trilogy, commissioned by the group. Active as a composer, his works for solo marimba and chamber percussion have become standard repertoire. Mr. Burritt is the President of Percussive Arts Society and currently holds the Paul J. Burgett Distinguished Professorship and is head of the Percussion Department at the Eastman School of Music where he is only the third person in the history of the school to hold this position.
Peter Prommel studied at the University of the Arts in Amsterdam and the Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio (US), both pedagogy and performance diploma (Master of Music). Peter worked at ensembles like the Radio Chamber Orchestra Hilversum (RKO), The Netherlands Wind Ensemble (NBE), and institutes like the Conservatory of Amsterdam (CvA), both as conductor and soloist. Peter took a special interest in innovative teaching methods and developed a new department for innovative percussion at the Hochschule für Musik, Detmold Germany, where he works as professor and head of the department; he is developing new courses for non-western music as well as embodied learning. His interests go to learning theories and the art of studying and rehearsing, inspiring people to give meaning to their professional activities and their lives in general.
Definitely worth mentioning: a former student of Jan Pustjens, Iñaki Martin, master during the second JP Focus Day in 2017, has made a composition for snare drum solo in memory of Jan, who died on January 7, 10 years ago. The publication was made possible by Henny van den Abbeelen of Pustjens Percussion Products.
